doha • Hong Kong’s Chan Yun To, the reigning Asian 75kg bodybuilding champion, easily outclassed his competitors to win the gold medal at Al Dana Sports Club yesterday.
Chan finished with a score of 10 in this evening’s final to win the top prize, ahead of Japan’s Yoshihiro Yano, who earned silver with a score of 27 points in the final, Mohamed Ismail Muhammad of Singapore placed third with 37 points.
Korea’s Kim Myung Sub held the same score as Muhammad, but the judging panel relegated him to fourth place in front of Haji Shaban Eid Pashok Al Balushi of Oman – finishing fifth with a total score of 66.
In the one-minute freestyle round to music, Yano, 42, was first to compete, taking the stage to perform a variety of chest, arm and back poses to hard rock music. Muhammad was next, beginning his routine with a front double bicep pose. The Singaporean was boosted by a large crowd of supporters at the Sports Club who were shaking tambourines and waving flags when he performed.
Oman’s Al Balushi, 29, carried out his routine using much of the back double biceps pose to good effect. However, at the age of 40, Chan showed his body is still in top form with his muscle definition and body symmetry far surpassing his opponents.
Kim, 37, was the last of the finalists to perform the freestyle routine as he used all his muscles evenly while he performed to 80s rock music.
With the seven compulsory poses completed, all competitors once again took to the stage for the final pose-down, where Al Balushi continued to show off his back double biceps and front lat spread after everyone else had finished.
“At the last Asian Games I failed to win any medals, so my win today was unbelievable,” said a delighted Chan. “I was about to cry — I am so happy. It was not easy because all competitors performed at a high level.”
