71-year-old KH man wins bodybuilding contestDate: 19.08.2004 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team United States
One of six middleweight over-70 contestants, Burnett took home the trophy but said it was his last contest. "I said it was going to be my last, but I don't know for sure," said Burnett. Burnett worked out two to three hours per day, five days per week since December to get ready for the competition. He went from about 200 pounds in December to 176 pounds (competition weight) through strict dieting and of course, plenty of exercise. "Age is just a number," said Brian Smith, owner of Family Fitness Center in Melrose. "He's an inspiration, not only to guys my age, but to guys in their senior years." Burnett has worked out for 41 years. At the age of 57, he entered his first bodybuilding show at Florida Theater in Jacksonville. He competed in 35 shows since. Many of those years, his workouts took place in his garage but he said two or three months ago, the heat forced him to look at a fitness center because it was cooler. That's when he chose Family Fitness Center to train for this past competition. "We're not Gainesville Health and Fitness," said Smith. "We do have what works." Smith said he's had members join his club because they've seen Burnett working out there. Burnett said that made him feel good and made it all worthwhile. Burnett said Smith had been helpful these past three months as has his fiancee, Betty Terry, and he thanks them both. "I guess I can do these things because of what I've done through staying physically fit," said Burnett. He attributed his physical fitness to being able to heal faster when he injures himself or gets sick. He said the sooner he gets back in the gym after an injury - like falling from a ladder, which happened - the better he feels.
