ABBWF confirms Stubbs as guest-poser at competitionDate: 15.05.2007

Joel Stubbs, an internationally renowned bodybuilder, will be in Antigua next month when he is expected to put on a show for the public. This is according to President of the Antigua & Barbuda Bodybuilding & Weightlifting Federation (ABBWF), Errol Williams, who confirmed that they have booked the athlete as a guest-poser on the upcoming 23 June Bodybuilding and Figure Competition.
“He has one of the biggest and best backs in bodybuilding right now and I know that he will be a treat for those attending the show,” Williams said.
The former bodybuilder, went on to state that the Federation opted for Stubbs for a number of reasons – one of which being their commitment towards promoting the athletes available within the Caribbean.
“First of all he is a Caribbean bodybuilder and we wanted to stay true to our aim of promoting our regional bodybuilders. Secondly, cost played a factor in our final decision as well,” he told the SUN.
Williams went on to state that the show will host am estimated 20 bodybuilders with about five women competing throughout the various categories – something he says is still a concern for the Federation.
“It’s a concern for us right now because we thought that we would have gotten more women bodybuilders. So far we have two for the figure competition and one for the bodybuilding with another one tentative for both categories. At the start we had quite a few of ladies who were interested in taking part but as we went along they all dropped out for various reasons so we are keeping our fingers crossed,” Williams said.
The competition, which is slated for an 8p.m. start at the Cathedral Cultural Center, will feature some of the country’s top bodybuilders as they seek to dethrone defending champions Steve Williams and figure class champion Safiya Jardine. Defending women’s bodybuilding champion, Beverly Percival, will not be defending her title.
In 2006, the champions proved their dominance over their other competitors and made it seem rather easy, but according to all reports, this year’s contest could be the closest in years.
It is highly likely that crowd favourite Dave “Apple Boy” Roacher will be making his usual appearance as he is said to be in improved and dangerous form, while a number of first-timers are expected to also take the stage in the novice category. Admission for the show is $45. |
