An Oscar shout-out for SchwarzeneggerDate: 26.02.2007 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team United States
LOS ANGELES - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger got a cross-border shout-out from the German writer-director whose movie won the Oscar for best foreign language film.
Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, who won for the political thriller "The Lives of Others," mentioned the Austrian-born Schwarzenegger in his acceptance speech Sunday and elaborated on his admiration backstage.
"He just seems to me like the ultimate embodiment that you can achieve anything you dream," Von Donnersmarck said. "He really inspired me as a child."
Schwarzenegger gained fame as a world bodybuilding champion before becoming an international film star and then governor of California.
Von Donnersmarck recalled being in a video store and seeing a picture of the muscular actor in one of his famous early roles, "Conan the Barbarian."
"I thought, `Oh my God, isn't it too bad people can only look like that in paintings."
Not that he agrees with all of Schwarzenegger's politics. He took a swipe at the governor for presiding over a state that allows capital punishment.
"I hope you understood that in the right way and not as an endorsement of the death penalty," he added with a smile.
