The side show now taking place in California, in particular the candidacy of Hollywood 'tough guy' Arnold Schwarzenegger is a glaring example of just how desperate American politics has become. In particular, it shows who will pass for a Republican these days...A Democrat!
Schwarzenegger has been trying to pass himself off as a Republican for many years. In fact, the "Running Man" is quite liberal. He is pro-choice and has been dropping hints as of late about massive new social welfare programs he plans to bring about. He does not deserve to place the 'R' behind his name.
Schwarzenegger and his supporters have been trying to draw comparisons between he and Ronald Reagan. This is not only a terrific insult to one of this nation's greatest leaders, it is also absurd. Reagan, before entering the race for the governorship did many things which help prepare him for a life in politics. Reagan was a broadcaster, he accepted a commission in the U.S. Army and helped direct Hollywood's war effort during World War II (turning out films to help rally the country behind the troops), and he also served as president of the Screen Actors Guild.Reagan fought against Hollywood corruption and communist infiltration (which whether or not you believe it, was a real threat at the time!).
Reagan was not only a movie star, but also held a great understanding of politics and the problems which faced this nation before he ran for governor. What has Arnold done besides make 'blow 'em-up' movies and serve as the front man for his wife's charities? One thing the "Terminator" does have is the beautiful Maria Shriver at his side, no doubt prompting him as if he is still the giant brain-less robot he is so famous for playing.
Arnold has not been able to answer questions posed by the press such as: How will you balance the budget? How will you solve the state's energy crisis? How are you going to deal with the enormous influx of illegal aliens? He simply shoots back with well-known lines from his movies. Perhaps, he is waiting for his wife and the rest of 'Team Arnold' to tell him just what his stance is.
Answering questions on serious policy issues with 15 year old movie lines will lose it's charm very quickly. California is in the worst shape in that state's existence, Californians need a serious candidate, one with a serious plan heel it's ills, not a bodybuilding goofball!
Ronald Reagan was quite possibly the best president of the 20th century. He came into office with one goal in mind: to bring the "evil empire" to it's collective knee and he did just that. He also restored pride to this nation's citizens and over-saw the most prosperous time to date, in this country's history. He was the first (and most effective) American president to fight Arab-Muslim terrorism (Qadaffhi has never been the same!). The transformation this nation underwent after Carter spent four years driving it into the ground, was nothing short of miraculous. We are still reaping the rewards of Reagan's legacy, as is all of Eastern Europe. Reagan is truly a living legend and deserves every bit of praise he receives.
My prediction: California under Gov. Schwarzenegger (sounds ridiculous, huh?), will continue it's downward spiral. Eventually the federal government (i.e. the American taxpayers) will have to bail out the state. Arnold will learn rather quickly that big-time politics is very different from play-acting. His lack of experience and knowledge will no doubt make re-election for George Bush in 2004 more difficult.
Let's face it Arnold...The "Great Communicator" you are not!
