Auckland bodybuilder lucky to be aliveDate: 07.12.2006 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team New Zealand
A champion bodybuilder stabbed seven times during an altercation in a Henderson carpark is in a stable condition in Auckland Hospital.
Police say Salah Ibrahim, 22, is lucky to be alive.
Mr Ibrahim was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries after the stabbing last Saturday at around 2.15pm.
His condition had stabilised by the next day and it is understood he is no longer in danger.
But it could be a while before Mr Ibrahim, who won the national under 23 bodybuilding title in Tauranga just over a year ago, is competing again.
The Kelston resident owns the Henderson branch of Xtreme Nutrition, a supplier of protein powders and nutritional products.
Xtreme Nutrition company owner Moe Moussawi says he's doing well in hospital where his shocked family have been by his side.
"He's a strong kid."
Mr Ibrahim came to New Zealand as a Kurdish refugee in 1996.
He started bodybuilding after being bullied at school and joined a commercial gym when he was 15.
"I was only 56kg at school and used to get picked on a lot," he said in a Western Leader article last year. "It was hard for me to get to know others because my English was not so good."
Mr Ibrahim soon won a string of secondary school titles, modelling himself on Hollywood movie star and former Mr Universe, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
"I watch his Pumping Iron video to motivate me before I compete," he said.
"My goal is to go professional in two to three years and compete at Mr Olympia.
"That is the ultimate."
A 31-year-old man was arrested in connection with Saturday's incident and charged with wounding with intent.
He appeared in the Waitakere District Court on Monday where he entered no plea and was remanded in custody.
A date for his second hearing has yet to be set.
Police are still investigating the circumstances of the stabbing.
