The Bahamas Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation’s 13-member team won seven medals and finished fourth out of 30 countries, competing at the Central American and Caribbean Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships held in Jamaica on the weekend. Winning the championship sanctioned by the International bodybuilding Federation was Venezuela which had a 20 member team. Barbados’ 19- member team was second and Jamaica’s 33-member team was third.
In all The Bahamas won two golds, three silvers and two bronze medals.
The mixed doubles’ Gina Mackey and Raymond Tucker defended their title at the event, winning the gold.
Samantha Sweeting won the second gold medal in the women’s fitness category.
Tucker captured one of the three silver medals in the men’s masters division. He also won the second silver in the welterweight division.
Paul Wilson, competing in the men’s bantamweight division captured the third silver medal.
Jay Darling won one of the two bronze medals, competing in the men’s middleweight division. Winning the other bronze medal was Grand Bahama’s Charmaine McNabb in the women’s masters division.
BBFF President Danny Sumner told The Bahama Journal that the national team finished fourth last year winning less medals. But Sumner pointed out that the level of competition was much higher this year.
"The contest sessions were long and they lasted late into the mornings. We knew that the competition was going to be tough and indeed it was. Every category was competitive and only the top five moved on to the final round. So in this light I think that we did extremely well. In all there were much more competitors than last year," noted Sumner.
Sumner added that The Bahamas did not field any competitors in three divisions, men’s lightweight, men’s heavyweight and women’s lightweight.
"I am sure that our shortage in these divisions cost us some points. The top three countries had competitors in all the divisions," explained Sumner.
Next the BBFF is expected to send a two-member men’s team to the World Championship, Mr. Universe, during the first week of November.
