Behold a legend!Date: 01.03.2007 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team Bahamas
Arthur Eldon is a reluctant legend.
In fact, mention the word "legend" to him and he would be quick to push back the mantle from his head and claim that he is just a regular guy, doing his best.
Eldon may look like a regular guy and may even sound like a regular guy, but there is nothing regular about Arthur Eldon.
Just consider this; Arthur Eldon has been competing on the bodybuilding stage since 1960, when he took third place in the Mr. Bahamas championship.
His latest competition to date was at the Southern States Bodybuilding championships in Fort Lauderdale, in late 2006, when he took second place in the Masters over 60 category.
In between those times, Eldon has competed in over 114 bodybuilding shows, nationally as well as internationally, making him the longest active Bahamian bodybuilder ever.
That kind of competition record may put Eldon right up there on the international stage as one of the most active bodybuilders ever.
Not only has Eldon competed in so many competitions, he has appeard on a number of international magazine covers, making him a household name back at the prime of his career.
Although he's over 60, Eldon is still going strong and has plans to compete again this year.
Many times he's talked about retirement, but every year he breaks that promise to himself and finds himself on the stage somewhere posing to his tradional 'cowboy' music.
"It's in my blood and I find it hard to stop competing," Eldon is famed for saying.
With so many accomplishments under his belt it seemed more than fitting that Arthur Eldon be honoured as a Bahamian sporting icon. Such an honour will come on March 31, when the first annual A & B Tributes will honour Eldon, along with others in a dinner banquet.
Organiser of the event, Baldwin Darling, said that he wanted to pay tribute to the people who have inspired him over the years in the sport of bodybuilding, and Eldon is one name that instantly comes to mind.
"The guy has been around so long and has remained faithful to the sport of bodybuilding, that I felt his commitment needed to be highlighted and honoured," said Darling.
Eldon will be honoured along with 20 others who have made contributions to the sport of local bodybuilding.
Those also being honoured will include Hubert Wong, Richard Demeritte, Glen Wells, Emile Poitier, Sam Williams, Dwight Palacious, Ralph Burrows, Cliff Wilson, Frankie Mather Knowles, Flint Bridgewater, Michael Hall, Henry Charlton, Dr. Norman Gay, Ezra Russell, Michael Curtis, Joe Cartwright Senior, George Murray, Emos Saunders, Neil Dean, Victor Lockhart, Petra Brice, Melanie Fiester, Wendy Willis, Sol Frazier, Dave Micklewhite, Lawrence Hepburn Sr., Lawrence Bain, Rudy Pinder, Willie Seymour and Tony Carrol.
Of those to be honoured, the fallen heros include Victor Lockhart, Basil Williams, Frankie Mather, Megan Knowles, Willie "the Hulk" Seymour, Flint Bridgewater, Michael "Prince Mike" Hall, Lynden Smith, Natasha Munroe and Lawrence "Dinky" Bain.
"I feel that it's been long overdue that these people were not honoured for their dedication, sacrifices and commitment to the development of the sport of bodybuilding and powerlifting," said Darling.
"That's why I wanted to host this event to let them know how much we appreciate all that they've done in paving the way for us."
Darling said that the special dinner banquet is something that he wanted to do a long time ago, but had no means whereby he could realise his dream. He said because he didn't want to leave out anyone, he did not want to just honour one or two persons, but to put something together where all of the legends could get their just due.
Exactly where the awards banquet will be held has not yet been decided, but Darling assures that it will be at a place fitting of the occassion.
