Bibby second in L.A.Date: 17.11.2006 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team Canada
Thousands of squats, leg curls, standing calf raises and pec deck reps. A strict low-fat diet and no drugs.
Andy Bibby's recipe for bodybuilding success was rewarded again Saturday night in Los Angeles, where he finished second in the Men's Medium Open class in the Natural Mr. Universe show.
A total of 80 competitors, including seven in Bibby's class, flashed and flexed for the judges and a large crowd at the Santiago High School in Corona.
A 28-year-old employed in fire protection with Chapman Mechanical, Bibby qualified for the competition by winning his class at the Canadian Championships last September in Edmonton. He plans to attend the Natural Mr. Olympia in Greece next November.
"I was actually one of the smaller guys in the competition," said Bibby, a VSS Panther grad and former Okanagan Sun defensive back. "I guess the judges liked my symmetry. They keyed on me pretty quickly. There were some big boys and while I might not have been the biggest guy, I made up for it in my symmetry and conditioning. I have the good genetics."
Bibby, a five-foot-seven, 171-pound charter member of the bicep brotherhood, said the long flight to California prevented him from losing the water he wanted to lose before the show.
"I was confident, but I was really going in just to get my feet wet. It was a nice surprise because there were no slouches there. These were guys who have won titles and been there before."
Bibby is working towards becoming a certified trainer at BreakAway Fitness, where he trains alongside his girlfriend/personal trainer Alexis Chapman. He also carries sponsorship from PVL Products and Your Gym Bag.
To celebrate his silver medal, Bibby gorged out on pizza.
"Everything shut down at 10 o'clock so there wasn't much to choose from. I saw a Pizza Hut on the way there and memorized the number. I devoured a medium pizza by myself."
