ANDY BISPHAM, the most muscular lightweight in Barbados and the Caribbean, says he is ripped and ready for the fierce challenge coming his way Sunday at the country's longest running bodybuilding contest, the Mr Bridgetown, slated for Combermere School at Waterford, St Michael.

"I am in good shape. I am going to be bigger and harder and looking forward to what should be one of the best Mr Bridgetown contests in many years," he said.

Bispham, 30, a two-time national and regional lightweight winner, said the man to beat was Martinus Durrant, the 2005 national light heavyweight champion.

"Durrant is the guy to beat. He is a tough cookie to crack and I am looking forward to the showdown," said the 5 ft 6 inch Bispham, who plans to flex 170 pounds of muscle on stage.

The contest will have as many as a dozen entrants, its biggest field for some time, and six of them will come from Fitness Solutions, formerly the City of Bridgetown.

The others are Patrick Harris, Anthony Agard, Damien Harewood, John Batson and Laron Gibson, one of the top juniors in the Caribbean in 2005 and 2006.

"This is good for bodybuilding. This is one country and it should make for a good nationals and a strong team for CAC.

"Gibson is bigger and harder. This is the best I have ever seen him. He is going to give a lot of trouble," Bispham said.

So the favourites are Durrant, Bispham, Gibson and former Barbados super middleweight champion Michael Riley, making a comeback after a six-year break.

Fans can also look out for Roderick Stuart of World Gym Warrens, who said he is sliced to ribbons. Stuart's training is being supervised by former Barbados champion, Roger Boyce.

However, Mr Bridgetown and the programme opener, Mr Novice, is bound to have some surprises. Two fresh exciting faces, Jermaine Thomas and Levar Greaves, are almost sure to produce some fireworks in Mr Novice.

Irvine Streete, the imposing, supremely confident gym owner of Big Red's Gym in Bay Land, St Michael, has been talking tough about Thomas. He told MIDWEEK SPORT that Thomas is ready to rumble with 20-inch arms, 27-inch thighs and "a symmetry that will be second to none".

"He is ready. Jermaine is an underdog but by the end of the ngiht, fans will be talking his name. He has a small muscular waist, a broad back, will be full and hard and when he poses, it is pure muscle.

"Jermaine is quiet, disciplined and trains very intensely. He is good enough to win Mr Novice and shake up the big names in Mr Bridgetown. He is a tank of a man and is going to be a rising start in bodybuilding," Streete said.

Thomas, 33, a pastry worker at Purity Bakeries, plans to bake his rivals with his 186 pounds of muscle.

Greaves has never stepped on stage but the buzz around town is that he is sharp and ready to go toe-to-toe with Thomas.
