In just about 72 hours from now, the Osu Presbyterian Church Hall in Accra will be shaken to its very foundation as 40 of the nation’s well-sculptured bodies will be on parade for the most-coveted ‘Mr Ghana” prize.
But certainly all eyes will focus on the defending Champion, Christopher Antoh (King Sabato), resurgent and once Champion Samuel Asante (Obuor), one of the longest competitors and dance pose specialist, Arnold Aryee, Eric Attoh (Paa Tee) and Cornelius Ankrah (Captain) and Mustapha Richardson.
And in order not to repeat the controversy that engulfed the 2004 competition, the organisers, Ghana MuscleFlavour Amateur Body Building Association, have roped in two international judges from Canada to augment four others from Ghana.
Murray Pwell and Peter, both well-known in the African Federation of Body Builders and the International Federation of Body Builders circles, are expected in the country tomorrow to have a brief session with their local counterparts — Daniel Edwards, Peace Edwards, Samuel Addo and Boniface Abotsi — before the Friday big show.
The athletes will be grouped into three - the light, middle and heavy weight divisions - of which the top three in each of these categories will vie for the ultimate.
Organisers told the Graphic Sports yesterday that seven of the final nine will form the core of the national team who will represent Ghana at next year’s “Mr Africa” in either Algeria or South Africa.
Depending on how well they will fare, the team will also represent the country at the “Mr Universe” competition, also slated for next year at a venue yet to be announced.
Prizes will be given to the Discovery of the Year, Most Muscular athlete, Best Dance pose and the oldest bodybuilder.
Also billed for the evening are special awards to be conferred on the Minister of Education, Science and Sports, Papa Owusu Ankomah his deputy, Mr Osei Bonsu Amoah, the Chief Executive of the National Sports Council, Mr Prince Oduro-Mensah, Mr Johnson Cliff Aboagye and Mr Saka Acquaye, Chairman and General Secretary of the Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Association of Ghana, among others.
Mr Abdul-Hayye Yartey, President of the Ghana, Muscleflavour Amateur Bodybuilding Association (GMABA), who has single-handedly promoted the sport to the international level in the past three years will be conferred with AFBB’s Best Administrator in Africa 2006 award.
