Bodybuilder aims to stay healthy and continue studies at UM-FlintDate: 03.03.2007 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team United States
Calling Jason Farber a "health-nut" probably wouldn't offend him.
Farber, 23, a senior at the University of Michigan-Flint, has made bodybuilding his life since he was 13 years old.
"I started lifting weights when I was 13," said Farber. "I went into this restaurant to eat and I saw a bodybuilder there who just looked healthy, and it inspired me to get into the sport."
On March 24, Farber will participate in the Novice Mr. Michigan Bodybuilding Competition. Last year, in April, Farber participated in the Capital City Bodybuilding Competition in Lansing and finished first in his heavyweight class.
"I was a little nervous going in because I didn't know what to expect," said Farber. "But as more of the competition went on I lost my nerves.",
As a bodybuilder, Farber spends nine months of the year lifting weights and taking in large amounts of calories and proteins, and then in the three months prior to competition and during competition he diets, which is called "cutting-up."
"I bulk up for nine months of the year and then diet during the three months leading up to competitions," said Farber. "It's a real struggle for some bodybuilders because you can go from eating 5,000 calories a day to eating less than 2,000."
Farber said that "cutting-up" is an integral part of the sport.
"You cut your carbs out of your diet and you cut a little bit of protein so that you lose body fat and become more toned and have more muscle definition," said Farber. "It can be strange because sometimes I go from 235 pounds in the offseason to 210 pounds during the season."
Farber said he works with a nutritionist daily to make sure he is not hurting his body while training. |
