SUNG Seng Lay, of Ingleburn, will compete in the Australian Natural Body Building Championships at Club Marconi this weekend.
Lay will be a part of a Campbelltown team named Team Hill Muscle Beach. Other members include Scott Hill, Adam Crowley, Joe Sanik, Hayden Davey, Emma Grabowski, Jake Davies, Ash Naidu, Miles Crane and Grant Cunningham.
Lay trains four days a week and works out at the Fitness First gym in Campbelltown.
Last year he won the Asia Pacific championship under-65kg title.
Lay last competed at the national championships in 2008 and came second.
This year the nationals will have prizemoney for the first time.
"I'm aiming to win," Lay said.
"I have a good chance to win so I am pretty confident."
Lay's preparation for this event began in March.
There are two main phases.
The first is the bulking-up phase. Lay said he found it difficult to put on weight but he managed to reach 75 kilograms by doing weights and no cardio.
The second phase is the trim-down phase.
Over the past 11 weeks he has had to follow a strict diet of mostly protein in order to lose the weight.
In the natural bodybuilding competitions the contestants are drug tested by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority.
"I enjoy bodybuilding naturally and doing the best I can," Lay said.
"I put a lot of effort into what I do; if I stand next to someone who's not 100 per cent natural I feel cheated."
Despite the drug testing there are still people who try to cheat in the natural competitions.
Lay said you could always tell.
"It depends on how you train, what foods you take — and in the natural form we're not all the same," he said.
"If you see a bigger guy, you think there is something wrong. If you stand out, there's a question mark. We can tell on the spot," Lay said.
He is planning to take a break next year from competing and come back refreshed.
"This is a stepping stone, I've never won an Australian title so this will be a warm-up," he said.
"Next year I'll take a break, come back in 2012 and then go to worlds".
Lay wanted to thank his sponsors and his supporters for their help this year.
"Big thanks to Michael Clunne from Muscle Beach, Scott Hill from ToneUp Weight Loss system and special thanks to my girlfriend Aimee for all her patience and support throughout this year," he said.
