Bodybuilder takes on the universeDate: 25.05.2007 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team United Kingdom
A WEST Cumbrian bodybuilder has qualified for the finals of the Mr Universe competition in October.
Shaun Watson, 38, of Mountain View, Harrington, finished fourth in the medium height finals of the National Amateur Bodybuilding Association championships at Southport last weekend.
Shaun said: “If I had finished sixth, I would still have qualified for the Mr Universe finals.
“To finish fourth was more than I hoped for. I’m now up against the very best in the world in the Mr Universe finals, which are also in Southport, and if I could get into the top three, it would be a dream come true.”
Sean, who has been taking part in competitions since he was a junior, trains and competes alongside his girlfriend Paula Ostle, and says he couldn’t go on competing as an amateur without the help of his sponsors Kerry Park Trading Estate and John Hoban Travel.
“I’m grateful for any help because I can spend up to L40 a week on turkey for my special diet and the fake tan for one competition costs L60,” said the Corus Process Engineering machinist.
Shaun, who trains at Northside Community Centre and at Ted’s Gym in Workington, said there was plenty of life left in him yet as a competitor.
“My good friend Bernie Cooper of Dalton in Furness won the over-50s Mr Universe last year and he’s still competing at 61 – so with him as my inspiration, I know I can go on improving,” he said.
