Flo Burke won Guam's first medal of the 2011 Pacific Games yesterday at Piata Stadium.
Burke, competing in the lightweight division, won a bronze medal. In addition, Richard Rosete and Brando Quejado both won a silver medal.
Women's basketball
The Guam women's basketball team picked up its first win, slipping past Vanuatu 61-50 on the first day of pool play.
Up by two after the half, the Guam women buckled down in the third period, outscoring their opponents 19-7 to wrest the lead.
Down, but not out, Vanuatu's Susie Waroka earned her keep in the paint, dropping nine of her 11 points in the final quarter to keep her team in the game.
Guam point guard Jocelyn Pardilla connected with Kat Castro and Brianna Benito in the open court to stave off any hopes of a comeback.
Benito led all scorers with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Castro added 18 points and 10 boards, and Pardilla paved the way with 17 points and 14 assists.
Baseball
Guam's baseball team earned the island's first win at the Games with a 3-1 victory over New Caledonia.
John Pangelinan picked up the win, and Tommy Morrison got the save as Guam knocked off the 2007 silver medal winner. Dale Alvarez led the Guam offense, going 2-for-3.
Guam faces Fiji today. Fiji upset American Samoa, the 2007 bronze medal winner, yesterday.
Swimming
Guam swimmers Christopher Duenas, Johnny Rivera, Benjamin Schulte, Pierson Cruz and Pilar Shimizu all advanced to the finals last night.
While none of them earned a medal, all of them set personal records in the finals of their respective events. Duenas advanced in the 100-meter butterfly and 200 freestyle, Rivera in the 200 freestyle, Schulte and Cruz in the 200 breaststroke, and Shimizu in the 50 freestyle.
In other action, the Guam men's basketball team lost 62-57 to New Caledonia, and the Guam men's volleyball team lost in three sets to American Samoa. The score was unavailable.
