The Guam National Physique Committee is in the process of putting together the best possible 2007 Guam national team to represent the island in upcoming international competitions, said Terry DeBold, member of GNPC.

On Saturday, GNPC will hold its tryouts for the team at 2 p.m. at the Guam sports complex gym in Dededo.
DeBold said the athletes have been notified one way or the other. And at this point no one has responded yet, and added that it is not unusual for athletes to say nothing until the day of the event.
Steve Oshiro, winner of welterweight class during the 2006 Guam National Bodybuilding Championships at the Hyatt Regency Guam last November, said he will compete.

"There is going to be quite a few, I think," said Oshiro. "We're going to try to be the best of the best."

He added that Guam may not be so strong on the women's side. But it should be interesting on the men's side.

All interested and eligible men and women bodybuilders are invited to the tryouts.

To be eligible, an athlete must be a division winner, gold medalist, in either a Guam national bodybuilding championship or a regional South Pacific bodybuilding championship. And he or she must also be a Guam resident for the last five years.

The athletes will be required to undergo an interview in posing gear to assess physical conditioning and to determine the athlete's commitment to training, athletes' ability to travel internationally and his or her ability to assist with expenses, according to a press release.

Chosen athletes, said DeBold, will go through periodic monitoring to ensure that his or her training is on track.
