Whangamata bodybuilder Jason Bartley has returned from the Asia Pacific Bodybuilding Championships in Rarotonga as Mr Asia Pacific Athletic, also taking gold in the athletic tall category.
His wife, Vanessa, took silver in the women's over-35 figure category, and the couple were second in the pairs competition.
Jason says the competition was his hardest yet.
"There were some decent physiques there, but thanks to our trainer, Teresa, she got my body to the right place at the right time and on the night was good enough for the judges."
He says hitting their target weight was a "hell of a battle" for the couple.
"It was only on the day of the weigh-in that we finally nudged under our target weights ... The entire Friday's menu consisted of melon and sipping of water so as to stay alive."
All the hard work paid off and Jason says the rewards were worth it. "Spending a few days in Raro after the contest was a highlight too, lazing on the beaches, visiting resort pools and ripping into some cocktails, burgers and fries."
Next up for the couple is the New Zealand national championships at the beginning of next month.
Jason says if the Asia Pacific competition is anything to go by it's going to be another tough competition.
"There were some pretty good physiques there, so nationals are going to be just as tough, with no doubt a few other physiques hidden in the woodwork that did not travel to Raro."
