Bodybuilding: 48-year old Garret obtains second placeDate: 17.11.2006 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team Malta
The recent National Bodybuilding Competition of the International Federation of Body Building (IFBB) was held at Tal-Qroqq University on Saturday 7 October. This event, probably the most prestigious bodybuilding competition in Malta, attracted 25 bodybuilding enthusiasts, who competed in 11 different categories.
48-year-old Raymond Garrett competed in the “over 40 age group” where he captured second placing. Raymond, married with three children, lives at Zebbug. He was born in Cospicua. He is a brother to Professor Mario Garrett of California.
From an early age Raymond Garrett was attracted to the weight lifting and bodybuilding training. He was influenced by his idol, the legendary Charles Atlas, whose “dynamic tension” method of body building and his “no, no to drugs” attitude sparked off Raymond’s interest and injected in him the love towards this sport. Charles Atlas became a father image to him. Weight training and bodybuilding on a regular basis became Raymond’s pastime.
At the age of 15 years, Raymond emigrated to England to pursue his educational studies. He studied for his advanced levels at “Chippenham Technical College” in Wiltshire. There he developed a reputation as a keen weightlifter and bodybuilder among the college students.
His dedication to this sport led to recognition. In January 1975 “The Chippenham College News” applauded the ability of “the overseas student Raymond Garrett from Malta” to this sport, and described him as “the junior weightlifting champion in the whole of Wiltshire region by making a dead lift very near championship standard”.
26 years ago Raymond returned to Malta. Since his arrival on the island he has been involved in various local fitness clubs taking part in a number of national bodybuilding contests, competing favourably against renowned Maltese talent.
Although Raymond never gained national recognition he never relied on the use of “the needle” to help him achieve this goal by enhancing “artificially” his physique.
A seasoned veteran in his late 40s, Raymond still proves himself as a threat to these colleagues among whom the majority holds him in the highest esteem.
To optimise muscle building, Garrett trains on a regular basis; and workouts became part of his life style. He spends time practising his posing routine, which requires skill, as this has a bearing on how he is judged.
Raymond is confident in himself and really takes pride in the way he looks. He stresses that bodybuilding takes more than dedication, pain and genetics; it also requires determination, confidence, training techniques, and nutrition.
Although facing superior competition in other bodybuilding events, Raymond adopts a strict method of organic dietary discipline and non-risky supplements in order to achieve his standard of muscularity to retain a good physical condition and to gain fat-free weight without becoming tarnished through the use of drugs.
Garrett stresses that there are no shortcuts to accomplishment by using performance-enhancing drugs. Win or lose, his therapy is “to stay fit, keep clean”. |
