Bodybuilding comes naturally to Scot IanDate: 02.12.2002 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team United Kingdom
Bodybuilder Ian Sturrock is a natural champion - and he has the lie- detector results to prove it.
Scot Ian, 29, triumphed in the light-heavyweight category at the World Natural Bodybuilding Federation Championships in New York.
The competition is only for those bodybuilders who are drug-free - and can prove it through a polygraph - lie-detector - test before they compete.
The victory is even sweeter for Ian because he quit bodybuilding for boxing some years ago after becoming disillusioned about having to compete against men who were clearly on steroids.
He only returned to the sport when pro bodybuilder Vicky McCann formed the British Natural Bodybuilding Federation in 2000. And he was the BNBF team's star performer at the world championships.
Despite still being an amateur, Ian, an electrician from Paisley who is known to his training partners as The Rock, beat professional opposition from all over the world.
Yesterday, he admitted: "Some people didn't think I should go to New York as an amateur because of the level of competition.
"However, the improvements I made between the British and World championships was like night and day.
"To go over and win was absolutely incredible.
"Each contestant was polygraph tested, which is extremely nerve-wracking, even when you have nothing to hide.
"Anyone tested has no choice but to tell the truth. If you tell the machine a lie, it goes right off the screen."
Ian, who is 5ft 6in and has a competition weight of 13st 3lb, said: "The guys who take steroids push themselves hard but they couldn't compete in our shows.
"It's more rewarding when you know your physique's down to you and not down to a drug.
"At our shows, you know you're not going to come up against these guys.
"Some have said, `You couldn't get in your shape without drugs,' but I take that as a compliment."
Ian trains twice a day, seven days a week in the run-up to competitions.
He hopes his win will attract sponsorship for both himself and the BNBF.
Vicky McCann said: "Ian showed real Scottish grit. He was the lightest in his class but very muscular and looked the biggest on stage.
"He thoroughly deserved his win and worked incredibly hard to achieve it."
