Bodybuilding Competition Day: Come Prepared to Pump Up

During my last bodybuilding show I came prepared with all I needed. I arrived to the venue with 99 other competitors and was excited to get the day started. The hallway, which was the pump room, was very narrow and did not offer as much space as I would have imagined. With my rolling suitcase in tow, I walked down the narrow corridor to find a spot where I could be comfortable to get pumped before walking on stage.
While walking down the hallway I noticed the pump table had two sets of 20 pound weights and a small pile of light resistance bands for the competitors. I was surprised. Although I brought my own bands I still prefer to use weights for that last, quick pump before walking on stage. With only two sets of weights and 100 competitors; that certainly wasn't going to happen.
Do not rely on the promoter
If you are in a bodybuilding competition bring your own equipment just in case you find yourself in this position. There are photos from the Arnold Classic with competitors using heavy machinery, but this isn't going to happen at an amateur bodybuilding show. Although many promoters try to accommodate the athletes as best as possible; you can't expect to have a full set of weights to pump with. Instead, opt to bring your own dumbbells, towels or a heavy resistance bands. Though it may be a pain to lug the weight around; it's still worth it in the end.
Hand weights
Hand weights come in range of sizes, and can be packed in your suit case if they are not too heavy. Hand weights can be found with rubber or neoprene coatings, or with a rubber gripper. You can also find dumbbells that have no coatings at all.
Dumbbell weight set
There are several types of dumbbells sets you can buy, but I prefer the portable sets that can be taken apart. Some brands also include a carrying case if the weights are light.
Adjustable dumbbell sets
Easy to carry and put together, adjustable dumbbell sets are an alternative for bodybuilding shows. Although carrying a set of dumbbells is a bit overkill there's nothing worse than not having a set of dumbbells to use. Adjustable dumbbells are in power blocks or have knobs to change the increments of the weights. Depending on the weight they are heavy, but take up less space than traditional dumbbells.
Towel
A towel is an ample tool to get pumped before going on stage. A trainer, or friend, can hold the other end of the towel while you perform exercises to create a full, pumped appearance for the stage.
Heavy duty resistance bands
Though you can use a medium resistance band, a heavier resistance band is a good way to get pumped before the show. Use a sturdy pole to attach the bands to, have a friend hold one end or use your feet to hold the bands in place while pumping.
