Just when you thought bodybuilding was finished for the year, the proprieter of Total Body Fitness, in conjunction with the Grand Bahama Bodybuilding Association is putting on one last hoorah just before the year ends.
Maurice Hall and Baldwin Darling have combined their creative ideas to organise the first ever Christmas Body-building Show, set to take place December 22 at the Hilton Outten Convention Centre.
Now, before the cries of the many local and National bodybuilders go up in protest, claiming they knew nothing of a bodybuilding show, it should be pointed out that this will not be a bodybuilding competition.
Actually, it will be more of a variety show, which will feature bodybuilders.
"This event is a Godsend by Total Body Fitness centre, because it will allow bodybuilding fans another opportunity to see some great bodybuilders and fitness athletes on stage," said Baldwin Darling, president of the Grand Bahama Bodybuil-iding Association.
"This was a surprise to have bodybuilding included in this event, but I'm very happy that it came along, especially after being disappointed about the fall through of the show in November."
Darling said that the Association had originally planned to have a bodybuilding competition in Novem-ber, but because of a miscommunication with the Federation, the event had to be postponed.
When it looked as if any kind of bodybuilding event to close out the year was going down the drain, Hall from Total Body Fitness stepped up and threw out the idea of his variety show.
"I thought that it would be good to have sort of an exhibition with some top bodybuilders, and I felt it was a great idea," said Maurice Hall.
"We want to keep the sport of bodybuilding alive in Grand Bahama and motivate other bodybuilders to go into the new year, renewed and prepared to compete."
Hall said he would like to see other gyms get involved in this bodybuilding show and trust that it could become an annual event at the same time every year.
Once given the go ahead, Darling proceeded to contact some bodybuilders and fitness athletes whom he felt would be best for the show, given the short time frame they were working with.
As a result, the variety show will feature Bahamian pro bodybuilder, Joel "Diamond Back" Stubbs, Petra Brice, who made a great comeback in the figure division at the June Show; Dominique Wilkinson, who has won a number of local and national figure championships, will also be on stage, along with John Hart, who made his return to the stage in June of this year.
Also, American bodybuilder, who wowed the audience during the Grand Bahama Bodybuilding show in June, Debi Laszewski will be back in town for this December 22 show.
"Debi only got to perform for about 60 seconds during The Bahamas versus the USA show, but when she comes back this month, she will put together a much longer routine," said Darling.
"Joel is much bigger today than he was when he was here in June, so fans will be in for a treat when he steps on stage come December 22."
There will also be a comedian who will be the host of the show.
"This proves that Hall and Total Body Fitness is committed to the sport of bodybuilding and I hope that more gyms will see it fit to do something similar," said Darling.
"I think that this will serve as a motivating factor as we go into the new year."
Tickets will be $20 and available at various locations, including Total Body Fitness in the Regent Centre.
"We believe this will be a great show and a good way to close out the year," added Darling.
"I have no doubt that fans will enjoy this show."
Also during that night a few local bodybuilders will be honoured by the Grand Bahama Bodybuilding Association for their growth this year.
