Building up your body without supervision could well mean wrecking your mind and your soul.

Rohan D’mello, 26, (name changed) an advertising professional, spends several hours a day pumping iron for a burly and bumpy body. He takes synthetic fat burners to aid his workout—without instructions from a trainer.

The bumps are OK, but lately he is showing symptoms of depression.

And the experts are not surprised. “Of the supplements, fat burners can cause serious side-effects. Overdoses of them could result in depression and headaches and have serious psychological implications too,” says Farhana Afroz, nutritionist, BGS Global Hospital.

“Also, the trend of taking multi-vitamin pills by youngsters on a daily basis could have adverse effects. All these supplements contain caffeine, thus an overdose of these pills affects a person psychologically,” she says.

Mithun Mohan, a professional bodybuilder, says: “Youngsters who want quicker results don’t bother about instructions.”

He finds supervision by a professional nutritionist, dietician or a fitness instructor as crucial. Some indulge in overdoses of food supplements that increases heartbeat and can lead to heart problems too.

Dr MJ Thomas, clinical psychiatrist, Sagar Hospital, says that plain obsession with workouts, too, can lead to obsessive compulsive disorders. “Traits such as stubbornness and moodiness can be found among people who have compulsive obsession for workouts.”
