Bodybuilding show slated Saturday

Fairbanks-born Matt Lowden and Anchorage’s Karen Patten are the guest posers for the Northern Lights Bodybuilding Championships on Saturday in the Pioneer Park Civic Center. Pre-judging starts at noon and the main show is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Lowden, who resides in Juneau, has won eight overall titles and is preparing for the PDI Night of Champions in New York on Sept. 29. Patten is a professional fitness competitor.
John Wayne Johnson of Elmendorf Air Force Base, last year’s Northern Lights overall champion, will also be guest posing and Alaska bodybuilding legend Lindsay Knight of Kodiak will be the master of ceremonies.
More than 20 entrants from around the state are scheduled to compete.
Tickets are available at Hoitt’s Stereo and Video LLC, 1616 S. Cushman St., and there is a discount for military personnel.

Tickets purchased for the Northern Lights Bodybuilding Championships can also be used for free admission to the Alaska Hot Rides and Custom Chopper Show, taking place Friday and Saturday in the Civic Center.
The general admission is $5. Ages 12 and under get in free and there is a 2-for-1 admission for military personnel.
The show goes from 5-9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday, and it features a 1971 Ford Pro Street hot rod from Des Moines, Wash.
Performance lecture
Dr. Saul Miller, one of North America’s leading performance psychologists and an author of three books, including two on hockey, will be giving a free lecture from 7-9 tonight in the Schaible Auditorium at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
Miller is the author of “Hockey Tough,” “The Complete Player,” and “The Psychology of Winning Hockey,” and has worked with several corporations and professional teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, Seattle Mariners and Vancouver Canucks, and PGA Tour golfers.
He’s also scheduled to be the keynote speaker for the Alaska Hockey CEP Level IV Coaching Clinic on Friday through Sunday at the auditorium.
