A musclebound weekend is helping funnel cash into the city's economy. The busy weekend is seeing the Arnold Classic, a high school state wrestling tournament, a Bluejackets game, and basketball tourneys.
Thousands of top athletes and visitors from across the state and around the world means millions of dollars for the the local economy. NewsChannel 4's Mike Headrick reported that the revenue being brought in is a huge boost to this financially struggling city.
Columbus is now the temporary home for thousands of athletes and at least 40 hotels are totally booked this weekend. Headrick reported that taxis are in such demand it's tough to find a seat and that since some regimens require that athletes eat frequently, restaurant business is booming.
Asked how many times a day he eats, one athlete told Headrick he eats six meals a day and just spent $22 on one meal.
Multiplying that by the more than 70,000 estimated visitors converging on the Capital City, Headrick said made these well-conditioned visitors welcome every year.
Thousands of wrestling fans from across the state fill the Schottenstein Center as the high school state championships have also lured fans and athletes into dropping hundreds of dollars apiece into the Columbus economy.
A nearby Roosters Restaurant expects to triple their average earnings this weekend because of enormous wrestling crowds.
Headrick reported that all these big muscles are keeping the Columbus dollar from getting weak.
The average Arnold athlete he spoke with expected to drop about $500 this weekend and food is a major part of that spending and downtown restaurants are loving it.
Experts predict this year's Arnold Classic will bring in more than $70 million. |
