Arnold Schwarzenegger's former bodybuilding mentor, Joe Weider, says he's fixed it so The Terminator has nothing to fear from the dreaded tabloids during his California gubernatorial run.
Earlier this year, American Media Inc., owner of The National Enquirer, the Star and the Globe, bought Weider Publications, which includes Men's Fitness, Shape, Flex and Muscle & Fitness.
Weider told the New York Daily News that American Media chairman David Pecker told him: "Joe, we've done enough on Arnold. We're going to lay off of him. We're not going to pull up any dirt on him."
"I didn't have to ask," adds Weider, who brought the 21-year-old Austrian to the U.S. in 1968. Pecker "volunteered it."
Pecker disputes Weider's recollection of their merger in January.
"Joe Weider is 83," says Pecker. "I never made such a promise. Joe did say, 'You've hit Arnold pretty hard.' I said those stories were old news. But I also said, 'Joe, I will publish anything our readers want to read."'
In 2001, The Enquirer ran a story, which Schwarzenegger denied, claiming that the action film star had a seven-year affair with bodybuilder Gigi Goyette during his marriage to Maria Shriver.
