Consumer News: Web Search SecretsDate: 14.02.2007 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team United States
Most Internet surfers stick with the major search engines when looking for something online.
But as Consumer Specialist Ric Romero found out, there are some lesser-known search engines that in some cases may work even better.
Yahoo ... MSN ... AOL ... and of course Google are familiar names to anyone who surfs the Web.
But what about "SearchMash.com?" Never heard of it?
SearchMash is owned by Google, but with a different look.
Let's try it out. Enter a search on the title bar. Let's look up "Ugly Betty," the popular ABC sitcom, and you'll get the results on the left.
On the right, you can click on "Images" ... Blogs, even videos ... then click on the one you want to see.
Here's a search engine with an approach called Mooter. Let's try looking up our Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger. The results are delivered in clusters.
It shows different aspects of the governor's life including information on his native country Austria, his movies, career, and a category about Schwarzenegger's bodybuilding days.
Picsearch looks solely for images. Type in "Angelina Jolie" and you'll find more than 40,000 pictures of the actress.
Blogging sites like Blogger.com allow individuals to create customized Web pages.
If you're searching for blogs on a specific subject there are a number of sites like BlogPulse and IceRocket that will search multiple blog sites to find what you're looking for fast.
Want to make money while searching? Try Blingo.com.
It performs a Google search with a twist: Searchers are randomly entered to win an instant prize including cash, a plasma TV and a new car.
One of the most unusual search sites we found is "MsDewey.com."
It features a woman who calls her self "Ms. Dewey" who interacts with users.
And Ms. Dewey doesn't just talk, she searches.
Type in a question, say, "What are the funniest jokes?"
Well what are they, Ms. Dewey?
"A 3-legged dog walks into a bar and says, 'I'm looking for the man who shot my paw.'"
And, when Ms. Dewey is done with her standup, you can find the search results for funny jokes on the right of the screen.
In case you were wondering, Ms. Dewey is really an actress named Janina Gavankar who lives in L.A. And the Ms. Dewey website is owned by Microsoft.
