Young people in Florida won't be able to buy over-the-counter diet pills under a measure signed into law by Governor Jeb Bush.
Lawmakers approved the bill during the regular session.
It bans the sale of weight loss products to anyone under 18.
Legislators said the law was needed because many diet pills contain the stimulant ephedra, which has been linked to deaths.
State Sen. Gwen Margolis was one of the legislators who sponsored the legislation. She says, "It really affects your central nervous system and certainly it's dangerous for adults, but it's particularly dangerous for young people who tend to take too many of them and respond in a very nervous and irrational way."
The new law will prevent people under 18 from buying any diet pill, whether or not they contain ephedra.
