Dr. Joe DeMarco is putting some hustle behind his Mr. Massachusetts muscle.
The Ipswich chiropractor recently took the next step in his bodybuilding career by winning the United States BodybuildingFederation (USBF) National in Scranton, Pa., Oct. 14.
The reigning New England champion in the open lightweight division (under 155 pounds), the 42-year old doctor beat out 35 other bodybuilders for the coveted title.
“It was great,” said DeMarco, who tipped the scales at 153-pounds. “That was pretty much my goal for the year. As a matter of fact after the show I was a little depressed the first day back. It’s almost like when Christmas comes and goes. You have your goals set and you do all your work and you get there, so I immediately had to start planning new stuff, because it was a little anti-climatic after the event, but it was awesome.”
A drug-tested organization, the USBF mandates strict drug testing policies holding regular urinalysis screenings after each and competition. The drug tests make sure that every competitor is clean.
DeMarco couldn’t help but get a sense of deja-vu as he competed and for good reason. The Ipswich native previously won the lightweight title as an 18-year-old during a Mr. Continental competition in Chicago in 1989.
“I actually won the national title 18 years (earlier),” said DeMarco, who runs his chiropractic practice out of Rowley. “So I have a little longevity going.”
With his title in hand, the bodybuilding doctor is now setting his sights on the Big Apple. Dr. Demarco will head to New York to compete in the Team Universe competition in July.
“It’s probably the biggest drug-tested show that they do in the country every year,” he said.
The weight class winners will get to represent the United States at the World Championships in the fall, giving DeMarco something to shoot for in the months ahead.
“That’s pretty much the new goal,” DeMarco said. “I’ve got (some time), but I’m looking forward to that. It’s a huge show covered by all the magazines, so that will be really super.”
