Fifth Athlete Expelled After Drug Seizure At AirportDate: 12.12.2006 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team Romania
Asian Games officials on Tuesday announced that a fifth athlete had been expelled from the Games after customs officials found performance-enhancing drugs at the airport.
The Iraqi athlete, who is named as Faeaz S, competed in the 75kg bodybuilding competition. He was placed 7th in the pre-judging round.
He was found to have attempted to bring 134 ampoules of the banned substance nandralone into the country.
The director general of the Asian Olympic Committee Hussain Al Musallam, said the disciplinary committee listened to the athlete's explanations but found that he had committed an anti-doping rule violation.
He was subsequently disqualified from the games, his result was cancelled and his case was passed on to the international federation.
"The OCA anti-doping rules, in consonance with the WADA code, have widened the definition of anti-doping rule violation to include such issues as refusal, missed tests, manipulation, possession of banned substances and trafficking in any prohibited substance," said Al Musallam.
A member of the medical committee sub-commission, Jegathesan Manikavasgam, said that nandroline was administered by athletes during pre-competition training.
The drug could usually not be traced during testing at the competition stage.
He suggested that the seizure could potentially have prevented the trafficking of the steroid.
"It's like this. As an example, you could use one vial for yourself for the next 134 days, or you could give one vial each to 134 people. You go and figure it out," he said.
On Monday Myanmar weightlifter Oo Mya Sanda was stripped of the silver medal she won in the weightlifting competition after testing positive for a banned substance.
Oo, who was second in the women's 75kg division, tested positive for a banned metabolite of an anabolic agent.
Al-Musallam, said that Oo waved her right to have her B-sample tested and as a result the silver medal was awarded to Kim Soon Hee from South Korea, while Indonesia's Sinta Darmariani got the bronze.
Oo was the fourth weightlifter to return a positive doping test. |
