Fitness, physique is his passion

When softball wasn't providing enough fitness and physical challenges, Jeff Fisher, a Solanco High School alumnus, decided to seriously consider a body building routine.
"I played softball for about four years after I left college," said Fisher, "but it just wasn't cutting it for me."
Actually, a nagging arm injury that plagued him while playing center field and pitching for the Cecil Community College baseball team set the stage for Fisher's introduction to body building. "I needed surgery to repair my arm, which I kept putting off," said Fisher, now a certified trainer at Body Extreme Fitness Center in Quarryville.
Fisher said his cousin Robby Sturgill was into bodybuilding, and he saw the benefits it was providing for him. "It was during my rehabilitation that I gave the program consideration. It seemed to be a productive activity for me to pursue. I've always been athletic and surprisingly it came naturally," Fisher said.
Fisher, who weighs less than 150-pounds soaking wet, has chosen to enter the Men's Athletic Fitness criteria opposed to the Body Building competition that sometimes features bulging muscles on athletes some observers consider grotesque. "No, we try not to become as bulky as body builders," said Fisher. "We're more into toning and fitness."
Fisher credits both Ken Brown, a Solanco alumnus and national body building champion, and Joe Daddiego, a Brooklyn, NY transplant now living in Providence Township, with his practice routine and physical development. "Both Kenny and Joe are certified personal trainers, and have helped me with the conditioning and nutritional requirements. You can do it on your own, but it really helps to have someone guiding and directing you along the way," said Fisher.
"It's all about diet and working out. It is a lifestyle change," he added.
According to Fisher, dieting is the biggest challenge. "No doubt about it," he said. "To prepare for competition this is the roughest challenge."
Fisher readily admits competition may not be for everybody, but fitness and conditioning should be a concern for young and old alike. Not everyone would want to follow the regiment Fisher must adhere when preparing for competition.
"I eat no sugar, including fruit, no sodium, and limited carbohydrates," said Fisher. It's basically a diet of chicken, fish, rich cakes, lettuce and egg whites, which he consumes at the rate of 24 per day. Fisher said he usually begins his diet 13 weeks prior to a show. He also attempts to consume a minimum of one gallon of water a day.
Of course physical conditioning is necessary and he trains one hour a day, six days a week, usually on a particular body part each day. "I've seen some individuals come into the center and spend hours working out," said Fisher. "Really a daily one-hour routine is all you need."
Currently, Fisher is working with someone who has aspirations to compete in a show, and while he is willing to work with anyone with the same inclinations, he urges John Q. Public to visit the center and discuss the benefits of fitness and conditioning.
"Fitness is becoming a popular program among individuals," said Fisher, who recently placed second in a Keystone Classic National Qualifier. "I'm here to assist senior citizens, women, and athletes, who want to develop a healthy lifestyle."
Fisher, who also works as a supervisor at Black Bear Structures, is a certified personal trainer, a certified nutritionist, and a licensed EMT. He attended a school in Florida and became a certified endoscopic technician having worked at Lancaster General Hospital Women's and Babies Complex. "I've enjoyed the medical field, and I may pursue becoming a paramedic, but as of now I'm happy with what I'm doing," said Fisher.
He and Andrea Zimmerman have a 13-year old daughter that is his pride and joy. "Jaclyn is a very artistic and musically talented young lady," said her proud father. "She's in the gifted program at school, plays the saxophone and piano, and competes in the soccer program."
Not everyone has the same passion for fitness that Fisher possesses, but he's hoping many Southern End residents have a desire to learn more. If they do, he's hoping they stop by Body Extreme Fitness Center and introduce themselves to Chuck and Sue Fisher, who ironically are no relation to Fisher. The new Body Extreme owners may well direct them to the aspiring Men's Athletic Fitness competitor as their fitness instructor.
