Pam Novak-Smith inspires us all. She's' a mother of 4 who went from flabby to rock hard fit in less than 4 months. Now she's fit enough to do a fgure show as a figure competitor. Figure is a term used in bodybuilding shows for athletes who are judged on beauty as well as muscles. What did she do to get to this point?
Well, the basic idea is to eat lean meats and vegetables and cut out sugar and carbs. We all know this but Pam stuck to it for months. Call it the bodybuilder diet, kind of like what we see from the first two weeks of SouthBeach or the Zone. Bodybuilders and figure athletes have strict diets that will lean them out in several months. Pam says, "I started slow, drinking a high protein shake for breakfast and lunch. I started going to a boxing class once in awhile. And slowly I added weight lifting, then a walk, then a run......four months later I had lost 20 pounds. Just like that!!! High protein, watched carbs and fat, drank LOTS of water."
Lifting weights is important. Pam gained muscle mass to get so rock hard. Did she "bulk up" ? No, that's a myth. Look at her. She lost weight and inches by increasing muscle and loosing fat. Lifting weights for each muscle group tones all over. Lifting heavy weights increases muscle. (Don't do this if you are not trained, consult a personal trainer first so you don't injure yourself.)
Cardio is the final component. 45-90 minutes of cardio a day at a high intensity. This burns fat and increases aerobic capacity. It doesn't gain muscle but it is necessary to do with the diet and lifting. And, yes, that's a lot of cardio. And, yes, it gets boring!
And, voila, here is Pam before and after. Pam feels better, with more energy and doesn't she look amazing!? You can see her compete for the state champion title in figure at the Cyto Charge NPC Colorado State Championships at TeikyoLorettoHeights, this Saturday, July 14 th at 5 p.m. Go to www.jefftaylor.com for all the details. Go Pam!
