TRURO – Looking at the imposing and powerful figure of Truro’s Mike Lynds, you wouldn’t think the man had ever shed a tear in his life.
But that’s exactly what happened when he won the recent Atlantic Fitness and Physique Classic in Moncton, N.B., a goal he had been working toward for the past several years. Lynds is also the recent winner of the Nova Scotia Bodybuilding Championship in Halifax.
“I was trying to hold the tears back,” the personable 27-year-old said about hearing his name announced over seven other competitiors for the overall title at the Atlantic event. “You’re trying to look big and tough on stage and you start tearing up like a little girl, it’s actually pretty funny, but when you put your life on hold for six months to do something like this it’s a pretty emotional moment.”
Lynds won the middleweight division of the event and took home the best poser title.
The winners of each weight class face each other in the overall competition.
With the win comes a trip for two to Las Vegas to attend the Mr. Olympia bodybuilding competition and his own website, which should be up this summer.
Being an Atlantic winner also gives Lynds a lifetime bye to compete at the national championships without having to qualify, while divisional winners get a two-year grant.
“That’s really the biggest thing for me,” he said. “Now I can go whenever I want rather than having a year left and having to push it to get there before it runs out.”
Now Lynds is setting his sights on grabbing a national title and intends on taking his first shot at one in the September 2008 competition in Montreal.
Winning a national overall championship would open lots of doors as that’s when builders are considered professional and have the chance to compete for large cash prizes and endorsements.
But Lynds said he wouldn’t be where he is without the help of his family, friends and his wife Allison, especially through his strict 20 week diet in which every meal needs to be measured.
“Your social life is null and void when you start the diet so to have someone at home who’s in tune with what you’re doing and supporting you is beyond helpful and it really means a lot.”
Lynds said working with pro trainer Dan Frame helped push him from becoming a divisional winner to an overall winner at the Atlantic event. Lynds was constantly on the phone with Frame, who lives in Calgary, through the 24 week training process, which had him in the gym twice a day each day.
“He helped me get to that point I couldn’t get to before and getting in touch with him a year and a half ago is probably one of the best decisions I ever made.”
