SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Gang violence could be reduced greatly if more members of the public committed themselves to volunteerism and community service efforts aimed at curbing street crime, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Thursday at the 46th annual California Prayer Breakfast in Sacramento.
The governor added that positive attention, serving as a mentor and love are key ingredients to helping troubled youths escape the cycle of gangs.
"We all have to work together and we can get rid of the problem in a very short period of time," Schwarzenegger told the crowd.
Schwarzenegger recalled how during his bodybuilding days he was asked to speak to prison inmates to help them turn their lives around. He later worked to help those with mental disabilities.
He also said that he has been inspired by the public services efforts of the family of his wife, Maria Shriver.
"Anyone and everyone can go and particpate and reach out," the governor said. "Let's not forget what President Kennedy said. Let's not ask what this country can do for us, but let us ask what we can do for this country. That is the philosophy that makes America great."
