Justin Harris has been a successsful bodybuilder for the past five years.
But the 1997 Port Huron Northern graduate recently discovered a sport suited to his strength - powerlifting.
Harris achieved an elite total classification three weeks ago in his first powerlifting competition in Taylor.
Competing in the 275-pound weight class, Harris squatted 876 pounds, bench-pressed 573 and deadlifted a combined total of 2,149 pounds.
The 27-year-old has qualified for the nationals, set for July in Las Vegas.
"I've always trained and lifted heavy," Harris said. "My bodybuilding career has been good, but it looks like I might be better at powerlifting.
"I have a lot to learn. There are different lift commands you have to follow. Everybody was very friendly and helpful at the competition, even the guys I was competing against."
Harris' total was the seventh-highest in the world in his weight class. Individuals who reach 2,300 pounds are eligible for pro events.
After his powerlifting competition, Harris, a 5-foot-10, 270-pounder, joined the Elite Fitness Systems, which is a recognized leader in strength and conditioning.
Harris became a member of Team EliteFTS two weeks ago.
Team EliteFTS is comprised of pro and college strength coaches, world-class powerlifters, and rehab and performance enhancement specialists.
Harris, a two-time NCAA Division III All-American in football at Alma College, represents the team at powerlifting and bodybuilding competitions and provides nutrition and training insight at www.elitefts.com.
"As a national-level competitive bodybuilder and elite-class powerlifter, we especially look forward to Justin's perspectives and knowledge," said Dave Tate, founder and CEO of Elite Fitness Systems. "He has the drive, experience and training regiment to succeed.
"Justin shares the same vision as our company: empowering success through personal achievement. He will prove to be a significant resource in helping our site visitors achieve their personal goals."
Said Harris: "I've been so lucky to have sponsors for bodybuilding and now powerlifting. They have been a big help with supplying me with the proper equipment to train."
As the owner of Troponin Nutrition and the reigning Junior USA Super Heavyweight bodybuilding champion, Harris has helped hundreds of athletes with individualized, sport specific diet and nutrition planning.
His writing on nutrition has been highlighted in publications, including Muscular Developmentand Ironmanmagazines.
A Clinton Township resident, Harris holds a bachelor's degree in exercise science from Alma and works as an echo cardiologist at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.
