His best is yet to comeDate: 07.06.2007 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team Barbados
LEVAR GREAVES, the new kid on the bodybuilding block, says his performance in Mr Bridgetown was no fluke. He will be even sharper for the August Nationals.
"Look for me at the Nationals. Mr Bridgetown was a stepping stone. I will be bigger and better at the nationals. The knowledge that I have I can pack on a few pounds of muscle and bring the same level of condition.
"Mr Bridgetown for me was just a lot of trial and error. Fans ain't see nothing yet," he said.
Greaves has learned the nutritional side of the sport fast and has documentation to prove it. He completed a personal training certification course in nutrition in Manhattan at the National Council of Strength and Fitness.
The 25-year-old personal trainer at Oceans 2 Fitness is a breath of fresh air for a sport gasping for new stars and badly in need of a revival. Martinus Durrant clinched the coveted Mr Bridgetown for a third time, but it was the charismatic Greaves who stole the hearts of the fans at a packed Combermere School Hall with eye-popping muscle and a dynamic stage presence.
Greaves, winner of Mr Novice and second place in Mr Bridgetown, is a livewire and multi-dimensional personality who is accustomed to the spotlight. He is a model, a familiar face on commercials for Banks, Cable & Wireless and Malibu, and a versatile sportsman good enough to represent Foundation in basketball as a shooting guard and run track in the 800 metres.
No pressure
"My main focus is this show. I have even dropped my Crop-Over duties for Power X 4 to prepare for this show. I played sports all my life, so keeping in shape has never been a problem.
"I don't feel any pressure about competing at a major event like the Nationals. I am just having fun. I just wanna be the best I can be," he said.
Greaves has sporting blood in his veins. His aunt, Margaret Greaves, is a former national netball goal-attack and an uncle Leon "Foots" Greaves, spent several seasons playing Intermediate cricket.
Another product of Mr Novice was Jermaine Thomas of Big Red's Gym. Thomas, 33, had one of the best physiques on stage, but was smooth and had to settle for fourth.
Thomas was hoping to go toe-to-toe with Greaves but that clash never materialised. Greaves was an emphatic winner of Mr Novice with another debutant, 24-year-old Ryan Nightengale a worthy second and promising teen, Damian Harewood, third.
Coach Irvine Streete told the MIDWEEK NATION he is unsure whether Thomas will hit the stage for the Nationals, but promised a much better showing next time around.
The women's competition attracted just two entrants with the judges and fans having eyes only for 43-year-old landscaper Claire Barrow of Oceans 2 Fitness who came to the stage with 140 pounds of rock-hard muscle. It was an impressive comeback after a three-year break.
In contrast, Sophia Forte has made little improvement since coming on stage last year at the Miss Bridgetown contest. Those who supervise her training at Fitness Solutions need to go back to the drawing board.
