The future looks bright for the sport of bodybuilding and fitness.

There were new faces competing for titles at the 21st Satellite Bahamas 'Arthur Eldon' Bahamas Novice Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships at the Wyndham Nassau Resort on Saturday night.

After a pose down with Shavargo Jackson, winner of the light middleweight division (171 lbs), light heavyweight (195lbs) champion Tony Hosey was crowned the overall male king.

Jackson seemed to be more streamlined and chiseled but lacked size in the arms and legs, while the taller Hosey was more of the total package once the scores for arms, legs, stomach and back were added up.

Under the glare of the lights, and in front of screaming fans, Hosey who felt "great" about his performance said, "After 13 months of hard training I thinks I did a good job tonight. The competition was great, it was my first time and I recommend it to anybody."

Hosey said there might very well be a future in bodybuilding for him but he plans to take it "one step at a time." He hopes to perform again at the Grand Bahama Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships in June.

"I only entered the novice competition for the fun of it, and I was sort of surprised with the win tonight because everybody looks so good," said Women's champion Lorraine LeFleur who had a large support base in the audience.

She competed in the 119-pound division. LeFleur trained with popular national team member Paul Wilson at Mystical Fitness Centre for about two year before deciding to lay it on the line this year.

"It took a lot of cardiovascular work, a lot of weight lifting. Believe me it takes more dedication than anything else, but it is definitely worth it," said LeFleur who beat out Long Islands, Latoya Taylor for the overall title.

Bantam weight (130lbs), Takeshino Dixon, 18, out of Burnt Ground, Long Island and a student at North Long Island High won the High School Boys Novice Championship title over lightweight champion (147 lbs) Prince Taylor from Aquinas College.

Welterweight (170lbs) champion Jonathan Pratt is also from the North Long Island High School.

Dixon who was surprisingly confident on stage and ignited the crowd with his energetic routine said he is hoping to have along future in bodybuilding.

Long Islands' Jessica Fox, 19, won the Open Women's Fitness Competition, however, she was disappointed that there were no other competitors.

Kendra Knowles from Aquinas College was a double winner. She won the Girls High School Body Fitness title and she took home the title in the Open Women's B-Division Body Fitness after beating out Marsha Fox. Juliette Rolle won the Open Women's Body Fitness A-Division title.

The of athletes from Long Island were led by bodybuilding and fitness enthusiasts Police Reserve Omar Dally who operates Dally's Fitness Centre on Long Island.

Dally said he decided to promote the sport in Long Island to try and keep some of the youngsters busy and out of trouble. However, he said for the programme to continue and for the Long Islanders to be able to travel to Grand Bahama and New Providence regularly for competition, they will need to secure a sponsor or someone who can assist with travel expenses and living accommodations for the team in the future.

The BBF also honoured legendary Bahamian bodybuilder Arthur Eldon for his many years of contribution to the sport.

Byran Woodside, The new Minister of State for Youth And Sports, along with former sports minister Dr. Norman Gay presented all of the winners and awardees with their trophies.

During his opening remarks he said, "As the new Minister of State for Youth and Sports, I am excited about the work we have to do and excited about what I have seen thus far."

Woodside who admits to not having played competitive sports very much, wanted the sporting community to know that he is not partial to any one particular sport and expects to give all his equal support.

"Having said that," he said, "I will seek to provide the necessary funding and facilities as our ministries can afford and is allowed to do, to support all sporting activities in The Bahamas."

Woodside disclosed plans to pay tribute soon to one of the sport's pioneers.

"In very short order we intend to recognize your former Mr. World and Mr. Universe Anthony Carroll in an important way."

Secondly, Woodside said he is "excited" by a proposal by the Bahamas Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation, with respect to officially introducing bodybuilding into the high schools. He said he still has to study the proposal and meet with all of the stakeholders.

He noted that the marriage of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Sports would make things easier for managing sports in the high schools.
