Hot Docs awards winners announced

Stories about Canadian seniors were centrestage this past weekend when the 2007 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival handed out its annual awards.

The Bodybuilder and I, Bryan Friedman's film about his estranged relationship with his elderly bodybuilding father, won Best Canadian Feature Doc. Meanwhile, Serge Giguere's Driven By Dreams -- about a group of seniors' unusual lust for life -- took the Special Jury Prize at the event, which took place Friday at the Isabel Bader Theatre.

More than $50,000 in prize money was handed out at the awards, which also honoured Ulrike Franke and Michael Loeken's acclaimed globalization doc Losers and Winners as best international Feature Documentary.

Other winners included Without the King, Michael Skolnik's look at impoverished Swaziland (Special Jury Prize, International), Johanna Lunn's treatise on victimhood and forgiveness, Forgiveness: Stories For Our Time (Best Mid-Length Doc) and Arturo Cabanas' Man Up, about one father's brutal indoctrination of his soldier son (Best Short Doc).

As well, three individual awards were handed out, including the Don Haig award to Oscar-nominated Toronto filmmaker Hubert Davis, the Lindalee Tracey Award to Edmonton-based Trevor Anderson, and the annual Outstanding Achievement Award to Dutch director Heddy Honigmann.
