James Daley – Excel after late introduction to bodybuildingDate: 01.06.2007 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team Antigua and Barbuda
It was 2 Feb., 1972 and 25-years-old when I started my weight training at Byam’s gym in Gray Hill. My reason for this late start was simply because the gym had a policy whereby students were not allowed or accepted at the gym.
My interest for the sport of bodybuilding was derived from the fact that I just wanted to look and feel good. The attendees comprised the young and not so young men from the surrounding areas, and boy! they exhibited their physique well.
Prior to my becoming a member of the gym I had a history of epilepsy which caused my secondary education to be short lived. Amazingly enough that condition changed after I became physically active in the gym.
In my fourth month of being a member of the gym, Barrow obviously saw some potential in me. He approached me into extending my interest in taking part in an upcoming competition.
My first impression of course was “no” because here it is I am fairly new to this whole thing and what I could possibly have to show. Both Barrow and Byam conversed and didn’t give up until I made up my mind to do so.
The competition night came and the seams of the building were popping as it was well attended. This, of course, brought a shadow of nervousness over me since I am not at all experienced in these shows so I had no knowledge of what to expect.
I only knew of the compulsories and a few poses. I was coming up against men like Byam, Christian, Phillip, “Rat” and muscles in an open class. Byam emerged the winner, Christian second and much to my surprise, I was placed third.
At the latter part of that very year I was again selected to compete in St. Lucia and came third in the short class. I was overwhelmed with utmost surprise and happiness.
I was so filled with curiosity as to what the judges look for so I took it upon myself and approached one of the judges who outlined the characteristics of a bodybuilder. It was from that little information that I moved further in my training even up to this very day.
I am currently a member of National Fitness Centre since Byam, migrated.
