Just call local man ‘Mr. Oklahoma’ Just call local man ‘Mr. Oklahoma’Date: 03.07.2007 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team United States
It is a belief held that if you work hard enough, your dreams will come true.
If you asked Bartlesville resident Charles Colaw he would whole-heartedly agree.
Colaw, a personal trainer and owner of the 24-hour fitness center ‘Body by Colaw,’ earned the title of “Mr. Oklahoma” while competing in the 2007 NPC Oklahoma Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships. The NPC is the National Physique Committee.
“My dream was to win Mr. Oklahoma,” said Colaw.
He achieved just that by winning the super-heavyweight division in both the Oklahoma competition, which earned him his new title, and the region-wide Central Classic.
Both events were held in Tulsa in early June.
He had competed in the contest six years ago and earned a second-place finish.
When the time came for this year’s contest, it took a little coaxing by his wife, but he entered and made the most of the opportunity.
“I trained hard over the last six weeks,” said Colaw, “And ended up winning. I really went in expecting to finish in the top three.”
The contest, however, was not just about achieving a dream for Colaw.
It was also in part to serve as an inspiration for the nearly 150 clients of Body by Colaw.
Between Colaw and five other personal trainers, approximately 150 people get extensive help in getting to and maintaining a healthy level of fitness. They serve the needs, ranging from weight training and nutritional advice to helping those who have had joint replacement and other mobility-effecting surgeries get active following their prescribed rehab.
Colaw’s story is inspirational on its own without the tile of “Mr. Oklahoma.”
He spent his early adolescence and teen years overweight and was a very rebellious teenager.
“I was trying to get into trouble and have fun doing it,” he said in a story ran in the E-E in 2004. “I learned I could gear that [rebelliousness] into working out.
“I did power lifting when I was in high school,” Colaw continued. “But after high school, instead of being just big and strong, I wanted to do a little health and fitness. People were like, why don’t you go to a show or something?”
He says that if he can get up on that stage and compete, let alone win the title, that he hopes he can inspire those he works with and others to follow and achieve their fitness goals as well.
With the win, he has earned the opportunity to compete at nationals in November.
He has decided not to head to nationals this season, but has not ruled out going that far in the future. |
