PNG champion Donald Kaiwi retained the Mr South Pacific title at the 10th South Pacific Bodybuilding championships at the Sir John Guise Stadium last Saturday. Kaiwi outmuscled the odds for the second consecutive year to the joy of a vocal hometown crowd. He beat eight other challengers including Tahitian Manu Buchin. “The championship turned out very well for all competitors and also for the PNG team,” head judge Joe Daniel said. “For Donald to retain the title it is a milestone for PNG.” He said Kaiwi deserved the win because of the make-up of his stage pose and the physical appearance that added points towards his win. Kaiwi had the masculinity, body definition and presentation which determined the winner. Kaiwi was confident before taking the stage and said he was happy to keep the shield in the country. Finishing second was close rival Buchin. The other competitors for the top title were Philip Hope-Ebera (Cook Islands), Kevin Teiho (New Caledonia), Tony Sila (Samoa), Allan Yegiora (PNG), Jack Viyufa (PNG), Dixon Norm (PNG), Moe Moelasi (Samoa), Rico Leiataua (Samoa) and Manu Buchin (Tahiti). According to PNGBF, this is a challenge to all PNG competitors to take part next year to give their best in order to retain the title. The winners in the other categories were: Monica Mugarenang (U52), Elizabeth Monema (U57), and Debbie Wilson-Teiho (O57), women’s figure shot – Isabelle Sitiig, Philip Hope (masters’ men), Kevin Teiho (junior men), Tony Sila (U65), Allan Yegiora (U70), Jack Viufa (U75), Dixion Norm (U80), Moe Moelasi (U85) and Rico Leataua (U90). The overall winner for the women division was Debbie-Wilson Teiho. Overall winners for the mixed pair were Samoa, who also took out the team posing event. Meanwhile, Daniel also praised the sport for its fast development in the Pacific region and said it was growing from strength to strength. Next year, the event will be staged at the Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa. |
