Competitive bodybuilder Cerry Lamb, who owns and manages the New Pro-Fitness Gym in Cranbrook, has qualified for the Canadian Bodybuilding Championships after finishing second at Provincials.
Nationals are being held in Saskatoon on Saturday, August 14.
Lamb was able to qualify for Provincials in the Master’s Heavyweight division by finishing in the top three at the Northern Classic Qualifier in Prince George.
“I went into the Northern Classic expecting to do alright because I came it at 90 per cent of my peak shape,” said Lamb.
“It’s a long haul and you can’t peak for one show and expect to be at your best eight weeks later. The second show, Provincials in Vancouver, I came in at about 96 per cent. I was hoping for first obviously, but second was awesome. My goal was to qualify for Canadian Nationals, where I hope to peak at 100 per cent.”
Lamb last competed 15 years ago but stepped back to help raise his family.
“I still did the bodybuilding – the training. I just never competed due to the commitment and the time it takes,” said Lamb. “My kids are a little older. They really back me a lot and help me a lot.”
Lamb also benefits from owning and managing a gym, which enable him to train more frequently. He bought the New Pro-Fitness Gym three years ago from the previous owners.
“Owning a gym gives me a lot more freedom and leeway to be here and actually train two or three times a day, whereas if you’re working somewhere else it’s very hard,” said Lamb.
Lamb first got into bodybuilding right out of high school, when he was looking for an activity to fill the void.
“I was bored. I had nothing to do because I played sports all my life. I wanted to get busy again,” said Lamb.
A buddy took Lamb to the gym and he quickly caught the bug and has lifted weights ever since.
“I saw myself grow and wanted to do it more and more. I fell in love with it,” said Lamb. “It feels good to push a lot of weight. I like the feeling you get when you’re pumped. It’s quite a natural high.”
To train for Nationals, Lamb puts in three to five hours per day in the gym. Besides the training, cardio work, and tanning, Lamb has to really focus on a proper diet.
“Dieting gets rougher and rougher as you go,” explained Lamb. “It’s very extreme and it’s not fun at all. You’re pretty miserable.”
Lamb plans to bodybuild competitively for the next two or three years and attempt to win Nationals. After that, he hopes to get into competitive power lifting.
