Local duo enjoy fameDate: 11.12.2002 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team Canada
He wasn't paid for it, but the arduous task of being the only male posing with three beautiful women on a busy Toronto street was something Ranier Santos Jr. would do again for free.
Santos and fellow Winnipegger Tamara Yuskin submitted photos and were selected as part of a "reader model" contest, earning them the opportunity to pose for the Colorado-based Muscle Media magazine. The photo shoot was last August in Toronto, and their three-page photo spread hit magazine stands this month.
"It was just an awesome experience to be in the magazine," Santos said. "I'd never done anything like this before and it was just one of those things that you have on your to-do list in life.
"People were giving us looks at the shoot, because I just had shorts or pants on and other models were in swimsuits, and one of the models was pretty busty."
STARTED AS REHABILITATION
Santos, 26, and Yuskin, 32, had not met until the shoot. The two, who covered their own expenses for the shoot, have vastly different backgrounds. Santos has been training seriously for seven years, while Yuskin only began two years ago.
"I only started training hard at the end of February of this year and I got picked. I couldn't believe it," said Yuskin, who started weight training as rehabilitation for a back injury.
"I was never athletic, never participated in sports. I was always the accident waiting to happen."
Totally self-trained and a confessed "chocoholic," Yuskin has found weight training to be invaluable in her line of work as a massage therapist, which can be physically demanding.
Unlike Santos, she has no designs on competing as a bodybuilder. Santos is taking a year off from university to compete in the provincial novice bodybuilding championships in March. He firmly believes the natural route, without performance-enhancing drugs, is the way to go.
The 5-foot-11 Santos was 180 pounds for the magazine shoot, but hopes to compete at 176.
'BIG CHALLENGE'
"It's a big challenge (to compete naturally) because at the novice they do testing, but it's still random because of the expenses," he said. "I've never touched (drugs) but I've been gaining over the years. |
