Mach gets pumped at national champs

HA NOI — World champion Pham Van Mach took gold at the National Bodybuilding championships on the first day of comeptition on Thursday. He earned his latest medal by out-muscling opponents to witn the 60kg title.

Contestants from the host team, HCM City, and Dong Nai, took the first six gold medals. The competition is viewed as a tune-up for the Southeast Asian Games in Thailand in December.

Mach won the 2001 world 60kg championships and took gold at the Asian Championships in Doha last December. He also took gold at the 2003 Southeast Asian Games in Ha Noi,

Lam Van Cuoi, Mach’s teammate, dominated the 80kg draw and won the host team another gold.

HCM City also got off to a good start. Their men clinched two gold medals on Thursday. Asian titlist and Southeast Asian champion Cao Quoc Phu took the 75kg contest and Thuy Anh Khuong won the 55kg.

The national championships, the twelfth, feature 136 men and women athletes. The four-day event ends tomorrow.

Men are competing in 15 junior and senior weight categories, while women are competing for four. The mixed-couples draw will be divided into three categories. —VNS
