A few months ago, David Turner stepped onto the scales and didn't like what he saw.
He was reminded of a history of health issues and his five children. He made a quick decision -- his days of eating greasy food were over.
To begin the turnaround, Turner, a Spartanburg County magistrate, began working out regularly at the Nautilus Fitness Center.
Sticking to his commitment, the results began to pay off when an unexpected opportunity arose -- a chance to enter the gym's bodybuilding competition.
"I teamed up with my friend and started lifting weights really hard and heavy," Turner said. "He said, 'You really need to do this show.' "
The show his friend was referring to is the 12th Annual Carolina Supernatural Bodybuilding and Fitness Championship, which is scheduled for Saturday at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium.
The competition, which drew 67 participants last year, is widely popular among its entrants for steroid testing to ensure a level playing field.
"We try to tell kids you can do this naturally with a scientific approach instead of steroids," competition promoter and Nautilus Fitness Center owner John Lankford said. "We call it a supernatural competition because it is drug free."
Turner, who is 50, will participate in four events -- men's novice, masters over 50, Mr. Spartanburg, and open heavyweight.
Along with weightlifting, he has incorporated a cardio routine with strict dieting and burned off 60 pounds.
"It's hard sometimes because you can't go out and eat a lot or have that doughnut, and I like to eat," the 227-pounder joked.
Turner says a huge part of the competition is to handle all the different poses, a feat that is easier said than done.
"I'm getting there. It's different doing it in front of a mirror than on stage where you can't see yourself," he said.
Regardless, Turner says win or lose, he will be happy to show off what all of his hard work has done.
"At least I'll be presentable. That's a tremendous accomplishment there," he said. "If I come in last, I'll still feel like I won."
