Defending heavyweight champion, Ollyn Martin, says that he is in much better shape than he was last year but that his preparations for the upcoming bodybuilding show continues to progress well.

Speaking to the Antigua Sun about his prospects for the 23 June show to be put on by the Antigua & Barbuda Bodybuilding & Weightlifting Federation, Martin revealed that although preparations this year have been challenging that he is in much better standings than he was last year and is optimistic of his chances to take the overall title.

“It’s a little bit more challenging for me this year because last year I had ample time to get ready for the show but this year I still have a lot of business to conduct while preparing for the show so I am trying to keep a very strict diet and try not to get frustrated. My preparations should, however, be right on target and am looking at being bigger and harder than I was last year,” Martin said.
“I don’t know how the other bodybuilders are looking because I haven’t seen any of the other competitors so it would not be fair for me to say that I am going to win – what I can say is that I am much better than last year and if I am going to be beaten its not going to be a lye down beating,” he added.

The athlete, who is admired for his well defined legs, said that he is a bit disappointed by the fact that defending champion Steve Williams will not b taking part in the upcoming show.

“I was pretty much gearing up for him – I love the challenge and was hoping to have another shot at him this year but he has other commitments this year I guess, so he would not be with us,” he said.

“Last year I don’t think that my legs were in shape as they should be because I had a back injury that was hampering me but this year I have been working my legs year round so they should be better. I am a lot better upstairs – I have put on about 15 pounds from last year and majority of it is on my upper body,” Martin added.

The bodybuilder went on to thank a number of people and businesses that have helped him and continue to assist him is his preparations for the upcoming show. Included on his list are Sonya Allred from El Taco Loco, Health Addictions, Wesley Barrow and Roger Boyce from Barbados. He also thanked all of his supporters who encourage him along the way.

The show, which will feature over 20 of the country’s top bodybuilders, will be held at the Cathedral Cultural Centre at 8 p.m. on 23 June. Defending champions, Beverly Percival (women’s bodybuilding) and Steve Williams (men’s bodybuilding) would not be taking part in the competition. Defending figure class winner, Safiya Jardine will, however, be defending her title.
