Barbados' promising young body builders Andre Miller and Jason Carmichael were the two most outstanding campaigners at the National Sports Council’s (NSC) 2002 Sunshine Cereals Schoolboys Championships.
Displaying good muscularity, Miller, a student of the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic, carried off the senior title, while Carmichael of St. Paul’s Primary was the best of an 11-member field in the battle for the junior crown.
The two youngsters were quite popular choices among the large crowd attending the keenly-contested championships, which were held at the Lester Vaughan Secondary Schools on Friday evening.
In the battle for the junior crown, Carmichael set the stage on fire with his fine physique and remarkable posing ability. He also captured the award for being most muscular, while the award for best posing went to Christian Trotman of Christ Church Primary.
The incumbent Rogell Gittens of Mount Tabor Primary gave a good account of himself, finishing in second position, while third place went to Justin Nicholls of St. Philip Primary. Mount Tabor students Lamar Spooner and Rasheed Beckles were fourth and fifth respectively.
Christian Trotman of Christ Church finished in sixth position, while seventh place went to St. Paul’s Primary’s Pierre Braithwaite. Rohan Spooner of Mount Tabor was eighth while Daquan Cobham of St. Paul’s Primary was ninth.
The other competitors, in order of finish, were Nikolai Walcott of St. Paul’s Primary (tenth) and Shakeel Wharton of St. Philip Primary (11th).
The fireworks really began when the seniors appeared on stage. They were well prepared and turned in very finely choreographed routines.
Andre Miller made good his prediction that he was going to “set the place on fire” when he emerged as the 2002 Schoolboy Bodybuilding Champion.
Miller was judged to be the most muscular while Brian Clarke of the Barbados Youth Service carried off the award for best poser.
Pedro Forde of St. James was the runner-up for the prized schoolboy title while Clarke finished in third position. Fourth place went to Ryan Beckles of Grantley Adams while Troy Reid of SJJP was fifth.
Sixth was Alexandra’s Dwayne Broome while Shawn Mason of Deighton Griffith was seventh. Kevin Turton of Ellerslie Secondary and Paul Legall of Government Industrial School finished in eighth and ninth places respectively. In the female fitness category, which was staged for the first time at this level, Collain Hanson of St. Lucy Secondary emerged as champion over her school mate Nikala Edwards.
The crowd was treated to a remarkable display by some of the island’s top musclemen, including current Mr. Barbados Lynden Belgrave, himself a product of the island’s junior programme. Other guest performers were Walter Sobers, Christopher Belle and Carmichael Bryan.
Posing to Michael Jackson’s hit single “Speechless”, five-year-old Stefan Brathwaite of St. Paul’s Primary dumbfounded spectators with his outstanding posing ability.
