More women try bodybuildingDate: 22.01.2007 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team New Zealand
Body building is thought to be a sport full of bulky males, but more and more women are picking up dumbbells.
Debenham Fitness Solutions director Mike Debenham held a workshop in Timaru over the weekend to inform fitness fanatics of the work behind those bulging muscles.
Mr Debenham said a lot of women were attracted to body building or a softer sculpting of the body because it boosted their self-confidence about their body.
"Women like to look in the mirror and like what they see."
A lot of women got into the sport after having children and wanted to get control of their body again.
He said it was a huge achievement for many women to get on a stage and show off their body, as it was something that didn't come naturally to a lot of people.
Body building was often classed as a bizarre sport but the training intensity was no different than many other sports.
People often asked him why he ate "weird food", but he didn't see anything weird about eating a lot of fresh vegetables and protein such as fish or chicken.
Quality Physiques Training Systems manager Nola Tonks said there was a perception that body builders ate very little when in fact they ate about the same amount as other people.
Mr Debenham admitted body building was a high commitment but it was a lifestyle that he believed was very rewarding.
Mr Debenham had been body building since 1993 and coached, and judged some of New Zealand's top body builders. He was placed sixth in Mr Universe and fifth at the World Championships in 2005.
He had made a career from body building and got a real sense of personal satisfaction from watching clients turn their lives around to lead healthier lifestyles.
He said the secret to success was focus.
"It all comes down to how much you want it."
