Mufakose bodybuilding contest gets shot in the armDate: 16.07.2003 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team Zimbabwe
The Mr and Ms Mufakose bodybuilding contest is set to become the richest bodybuilding competition in the country after a local sport marketing agency revealed yesterday that it would pour in $1 million for this year’s event.
Temba Mliswa’s WorldMark Sports International will once again bankroll the Mr and Ms Mufakose contest, which will be held on August 2 at Rutendo Hall in Mufakose.
And according to Patrick Musira of WSI, his company is going to sponsor this year’s contest to the tune of $1 million.
"We’ve noticed that the Mr and Ms Mufakose bodybuilding contest is one of the biggest contests in this country and we’ve decided to sponsor the contest for the second year running.
"We are going to pour in $1 million which is more than the money the local bodybuilding association puts in for its Mr and Ms Zimbabwe contest," Musira said.
He also indicated that the organisers of the Mr and Ms Mufakose contest, which is expected to attract more than 60 contestants, were likely to spend more than $500 000 in cash prizes.
The total prize money for last year’s Mr and Ms Zimbabwe bodybuilding contest was $350 000.
The $1 million sponsorship for the Mr and Ms Mufakose contest will cover, among other things, cash prizes for the winners, trophies and miniatures, and the hiring of the competition’s venue.
At this year’s competition, contestants will be vying for honours in four categories — senior men, women, junior men and schoolboys.
Musira said winners would receive trophies while runners-up will walk away with shields and these will be in addition to the cash prizes on offer.
The event’s co-ordinator, Tendai "Goliath" Mukariri, said there would also be a raffle for different products whose prizes have been donated by companies in the health and healthy living industry.
This event is not only confined to the residents of Harare’s high-density suburb of Mufakose but is open to contestants from other places in and around Harare.
In fact, last year’s winner was from Dzivaresekwa and the 2001’s top prize found its way to Mabvuku.
Prominent past winners such as former Mr Zimbabwe, Innocent Choga, and other personalities in the local bodybuilding fraternity are expected to grace this year’s event.
