Munyikwa successfully defends Mr Iron Man bodybuilding titleDate: 26.05.2003 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team Zimbabwe
PRE-EVENT favourite Walter Munyikwa got himself an ideal birthday present when he successfully defended his Mr Iron Man bodybuilding title at Cresta Jameson Hotel on Saturday night.
Munyikwa, who had a well-defined upper body and good proportion, shrugged off a strong challenge from Zumailer Hussein-Maman and Collin Mushunje, who finished second and third respectively.
For retaining the 2003 Mr Iron Man title, Munyikwa of Empire Gym walked away with $50 000, a floating trophy and a shield although the prize money left many among the audience complaining that the incentives should be increased to justify the status of the competition.
Maman got $20 000 and Mushunje pocketed $10 000 but the prize money is a far cry from the amount the bodybuilders spend in preparing for the contests.
Gweru Sports Club gym’s Ngonidzashe Matandirotya was crowned the junior Mr Iron Man and the 19-year old bodybuilder promised that he will now aim to lift the junior Mr Zimbabwe title.
"I feel very excited to have won this event and now just watch me when I challenge for the Junior Mr Zimbabwe later in the year," said Matandirotya.
Sheila Klein of Bulawayo beat her only rival Danisa Chabwinja of Les Brown in the women’s category.
But the night belonged to Munyikwa who showed a well-chiseled upper body, defined symmetry and good pose to win the event against a relatively strong field of musclemen.
Ish Abdulla of Empire Gym, who helped in co-ordinating the event, said he was pleased with the overall standards at this year’s competition.
"I could say that the standards of competition has gone up remarkably this year.
"We now expect the trend to continue and I think that the Mr Zimbabwe competition will be better," said Abdulla.
