Murray builds for new goalDate: 28.04.2007 Posted by: Anabolic Info Team United States
Growing up in Montpelier, Patrick Murray's goal was to become a professional baseball pitcher, one that was within reach during his days playing for Campbell University.
Halted short of the goal when he tore his rotator cuff toward the end of his college career, he reached for another one.
"It's the goals that keep you going," Murray said, "keeps you getting up every morning, keeps you motivated."
It's an attitude that has made Murray one of the premier amateur bodybuilders in the country.
The hulking 26-year-old, who was drafted by the Anaheim Angels in the 2002 Major League Baseball draft, no longer hurls a 90-mph fastball, but his dream of becoming a professional athlete is alive.
Murray is training hard these days, hoping to make a serious run at a National Physique Committee New England Bodybuilding Championship next weekend in Boston, an event he finished second in last year as a heavyweight.
Tonight he will tune up as the amateur guest poser at the NPC New England/Vermont Bodybuilding Championship, which is expected to draw more than 30 competitors to Lyman C. Hunt Middle School in Burlington. Murray won the competition last year, and he aspires to go pro in the next year or two.
"I do a lot of research and study techniques," said Murray, who has been a personal trainer for four years and works at All-American Fitness in South Burlington. "It's year-round training, five or six days a week."
Murray earned a scholarship to play baseball at Campbell and was the team's co-captain as a senior. He toiled in the Cape Cod Summer League in 2001 and was on track to a professional career, until the injury derailed the plan.
"I got home from school and decided to do a (bodybuilding) show in two months," said Murray, who was the 16th-best super heavyweight at last year NPC Nationals, the sport's top amateur bodybuilding contest. "I dieted a little, which I had never done before. That's where I started, and worked my way up." |
